Author's Note: spoilery if you've never seen the first episode of Torchwood

The angry boy,
A bit too insane,
Icing over a secret pain,
You know you don't belong,
You're the first to fight,
You're way too loud,
You're fhe flash of light,
On a burial shroud,
I know something's wrong,

He's always been the center of attention. Bright, shiny, attracting everyone's eye but never giving himself away. None of them ever get close enough to see how broken he really is, and certainly not close enough to find out why.

Sure, bits of it peek out from time to time -- those who can call themselves truly close find him brooding on rooftops or in dark places, or have to clean up after his messy self-destructive impulses.

None of them really register how alone he is; how driven, how much pain he hides behind that bright smile and the glib comments. None of them see how close he is to true insanity, dancing along the edge and ready to fall off if he stops moving for longer than a split second.

It's been too long a wait, and he's lost too much. He found something to truly care for -- someone to truly care for -- and having that ripped away from him left a pain much deeper than the Daleks' extermination ray ever could. But he still searches, every day and every night, ears straining for that familiar sound, heart pounding in his chest if he spots a man with close-cropped hair and a leather jacket walking through the crowd. He has to stop and remind himself that this man is gone now, that he'd be different.

But the rest are starting to notice that something's wrong -- the cracks around the edges are starting to give. Tempers flare more often and sometimes they think he's not even human any more. After where he's been and what he's done he's not sure, either. He needs the right kind of Doctor to tell him what's wrong.

Lacking that, he climbs up to the roof of the highest building around and looks down over the city at night. Turns his face skyward and searches the stars. They hold no answer for him, no one rushing to save him from himself. He sighs, just wanting to feel alive again; stretches out his arms and lets himself fly on broken wings...
