Jack was nothing if not adaptable, but he didn't belong in this century. He made his home there because he had no choice, but he spent his free hours searching for the Doctor and his TARDIS, desperately hoping for a way to return to the life he'd known for such a brief time.

Hopping through time and space as a Time Agent was freedom, in a way. As long as he'd been willing to accept the risks of a less stable transportation method, he could go anywhere and any time. With his training, he was able to fit in just about anywhere, with the possible exception of his more open and free attitudes that made him stand out every now and then.

But that kind of time hopping paled in comparison to travelling with the Doctor. The things he had seen, the wonders he'd experienced -- and the terrors -- with the Doctor and Rose couldn't be reproduced by time hopping. And he knew it wasn't just the places they'd gone and the things they'd seen -- it was the freedom and companionship, and the love and belonging he'd felt with them. It couldn't be duplicated no matter how hard he tried.

And certainly nothing he'd experienced in the 19th or 20th Century could hold a candle to it, in any way, shape, or form. Suddenly grounded and having to live linearly through a time he didn't belong in was slowly driving him mad. The only thing that kept him going was the knowledge that the Doctor periodically returned to Earth -- sooner or later, he would find him again. Sooner or later, he'd be able to run away with his Doctor and regain that sense of belonging. Because he knew he didn't belong trapped on Earth in only one time -- he truly belonged out there, with him.
