It's funny how one word could bring it all rushing back. It just sounded wrong coming from someone with a Welsh accent, or a polished London accent. It was supposed to come from someone with the distinctive Northern accent that made him feel warm and happy inside -- from Manchester, maybe, or some place like Salford. Someone with a comfortably worn leather jacket, close-cropped hair, big ears and a big nose. And wonderfully big hands with a firm grip...

He grinned to himself, remembering the manic grin as the Doctor told him they were fantastic. He definitely had to agree -- they made one hell of a team, both in and out of the bedroom. His Doctor had reawakened his sense of honour and decency, and together they had risked everything to save mankind. They'd succeeded, but he'd lost first his life and then his Doctor in the process. But despite how much the loneliness hurt now, he'd do it all again in a heartbeat, just for a chance to hear that voice one more time.

They'd been fantastic...

He was pretty sure if she had ever seen him, she would have called the cops and reported him as a peeping tom or a creepy stalker, but he had only the best of intentions. He had done this a few other times as she was growing up, wandering around the neighborhood while she rode her red bicycle around. He couldn't help but laugh as she whooped and giggled, speeding down a hill, blonde ponytail streaming out behind her. It made him happy to see her so carefree and joyful.

Then there was the time one of her girlfriends from school had a screaming fight with her, leaving her in tears. He wanted so badly to comfort her, to tell her it all works out all right in the end, but that would break his own self-imposed rules -- not to mention at least sixteen Time Agency codes and another five laws of time travel in general.

But the worst time was when he realized what day it was, and knew that a certain lanky Gallifreyan would be showing up to save her from the Autons. No, that was the day he knew he had to head back to Cardiff and stay away from now on, because as much as it broke his heart, preserving the timeline was far more important than his feelings.

Instead, he watched her head off to work; smiled sadly and whispered, "Goodbye, Rose Tyler," and disappeared into the foot traffic. He never saw her turn and look around in confusion before shrugging and going into the shop.

He wasn't ashamed to admit that there were times when he was afraid. Terrified, even. But it was fear that fired the adrenal glands and sharpened the reflexes, fear that kept him from getting too complacent. It was quite true that he didn't stay dead, but killing wounds usually hurt, and wounds that didn't kill him wouldn't kick his whole not-dying thing into action.

One of his commanders in one of the very first wars he'd served in told him that there was nothing wrong with being afraid -- that things only went bad when you were sure everything was going to go right. It sounded like a superstition, but he'd seen too many overconfident, cocky people die on the battlefield to not put at least some stock in it.

And certainly, he was cocky -- he was downright arrogant and he knew it. But no one else knew how much or how little of that was for show, and how afraid he might be at any given time. Because now that he was the commander, it was his job to lead his people; to show the confidence that would encourage them to fight through their fear and face the kinds of things that no one should ever have to face even in their worst nightmares.

He's all alone -- there's no one else left alive on the station. The Doctor and Rose and the TARDIS are gone, and the silence is nearly deafening. The hum of the engines, the rush of the air recycling, every click and beep and echo surrounds him; feels like it's closing in on him, stifling and choking until he wants to scream.

But that's not the worst of it by far. They're all gone but every time he closes his eyes, every time he relaxes -- every time he stops working on a way to get out of there -- they all come flooding back. All those screams of pain as the Daleks exterminated them, all of the gunfire and panic, all of the desperate fear. The sound of humanity being destroyed while he fought to the death.

Every time he lets himself rest the ghosts crowd in, and he wonders how long it's going to take before they drive him completely and utterly mad. He can't stay here; he certainly can't wait until help arrives because after what the Daleks did to Earth, help's going to be a damned long time coming. If he doesn't make it back to some place populated, and soon, he's going to go completely barking insane...

He'll admit it, it's probably a bit of a fetish.

But he just can't help it -- something about the way the Doctor looks and smells in that leather jacket just turns him on. And the feel of that lean form, all warm and solid under supple leather; wrapped in his arms or pressing him against a wall, crushed to him in a heated embrace -- it's enough to make his mind reel and his body thrum with arousal.

And he knows the Doctor is more than aware of how he reacts -- the Time Lord may wear his leather as armour against the world, but now there are times when he wears it just for Jack. When they're safe inside the TARDIS and hidden away in one of their rooms, instead of stripping it off he wears it as he presses Jack back on the bed and kisses him hungrily. Jack lies under him, hands sliding over his leather-clad back and sides, then dipping under the jacket and jumper to stroke warm skin; moans softly at the way his lover writhes against him like a big, dangerous cat.

He can't help leaning in to breathe in the scent of aroused Time Lord and warm leather -- all heat and spice and deliciously wicked, this powerful alien in the shape of an incredibly sexy man. He eagerly spreads his legs to let the Doctor move against him, and a naughty thought flickers across his mind. Maybe he could convince the Doctor to try some leather trousers, too...

They're actually quite a work of art, the clockwork robots that perform so many duties on 51st century ships. When he's being objective about the whole thing, he marvels at the workmanship that goes into creating a mechanism so complex and still perfectly timed.

But sometime in the past few decades, people started dressing them up, and he finds something disturbing in that. They're not human -- they're not even capable of the more complex reasoning that advanced computers can perform. So why gussy them up in fancy dress and show them off like some kind of rich man's livery?

He can understand on the more expensive ships, when some rich owner is showing off his vast sums of money by prettying up everything including his staff and his maintenance robots. But even then, it leaves him cold.

There's just something disturbing about a mechanical man, ticking around in clockwork perfection, wearing the costume of a living being. Even the ones who wear masquerade masks are disturbing to him, and this pair, in their velvet finery and Dali-esque clock faces, each one showing half of a split timepiece -- he shudders to look at them, something in the back of his mind crying out that this perversion of Time should not be. It's not rational, it's a silly thing to be unsettled by, and he knows without a doubt that it really is just him. Because Jack would rather that time paradoxes sorted themselves out neatly, and that the sense of deja vu that he feels every day at the Time Agency would go far, far away...

Jack flashed a dazzling smile at the Doctor, then leaned against the wall, trapping him there.. "Hey there, Sexy," he purred, trying very hard to keep the Doctor from seeing how unsteady he was.

"Little tipsy there, eh, Jack?" the Doctor asked with a grin.

"'m not tipsy," Jack protested, then he laughed softly -- very close to a giggle. Close enough that the Doctor raised an eyebrow and gave him a huge grin.

"Oh, of course not," the Doctor said, "You always giggle when you're sober." Jack stuck his tongue out, then echoed the Doctor's grin, and the Doctor's eyes went wide. "Jack, what are you planning?"

"I'm gonna tickle you!" Jack blurted, his hands diving to the Doctor's sides, up under his jumper, and doing just that. He laughed again, especially when the Doctor gave a squawk and tried to squirm away, then his eyes went wide as the Doctor grabbed his hands and pulled them away from his body.

"What is it with you humans, eh? Always touchy-pokey-grabby with the hands, without any thought about whether on my world it might be some kind of huge breach of proper social behaviour!"

Jack's eyes went wide, his expression going from amused to horrified in a fraction of a second. "Oh my god -- is it? I'm sorry -- I didn't even think!"

And suddenly the Doctor's expression went from stern to a manic grin and he dove at Jack, his fingers wiggling and heading straight for Jack's sides. "No -- just wanted to catch you off guard," he answered, laughing as Jack shrieked and ran around the console room, trying to dodge him.
