Since returning from the past there's been a hollow ache in his chest where his heart should be.

So many things going so wrong; it's all spiralling out of control but this latest betrayal truly hurts. His team, his own group of misfits -- who never would have made it in London; would have been retconned and sent back to their dull lives, if that... With the possible exception of Toshiko, who would have been retconned and returned to a research position where she could still have been useful without having the access to the more dangerous equipment...

His team has turned against him, seduced by false promises and whispers of a demon. And he knows deep down it has to be a demon, not simply a man who can walk through time -- but he can't prove it to them because they're united against him now and won't listen to a damned thing he says.

He tries to shock them out of it by spewing hurtful, cruel things at them, refusing to allow himself to respond to the pain in their eyes. But it doesn't work, and Owen's self-destructive anger wins out.

Jack looks up at Owen as he raises the gun and fires...

...Ground shaking, alarms screaming, destruction raining down around him. He reaches out, grabs a leg. He doesn't even know whose, but he hears screaming and realizes this is the first time they've all seen him come back. And then the Hub is falling down around him, and they're helping pulling dragging him out. He doesn't know if it's guilt or responsibility or just plain desperation but right now he's not about to turn away helping hands. Every part of him aches, pain still lancing through his head and why on earth is it so hard to breathe?

He can feel it shuddering through him -- this is not the Rift healing itself, this is the Rift tearing itself wide open and spilling out something so dark and vile that it poisons everything it touches. This is the end of the world, and his misguided misfits have set it in motion...

They stumble into the street and he clings to Ianto, the only one strong enough to support him as he tries to make his screaming body remember how to work. And there's the demon now, gloating over his victory and leading the fanfare for the son of the Beast, rising from his millennium of imprisonment and spreading his blight across Cardiff.

He knows there's only one person among them who can stop it. Despite the fact that every beat of his heart and every breath still burns in his chest, he's the only one with a chance. And if he fails, god help them all...

He can't trust Owen, and he won't risk Toshiko or Ianto, so Gwen is the only choice. He has her drive him to open ground, and yells until he catches its attention. It turns and stomps towards him, and as the first edge of its shadow touches him, the ache transforms into a great blazing explosion of pain as it starts ripping his soul from him.

He begins to scream...
